‘Inside Out’ And ‘The Good Dinosaur’ Lead The 43rd Annual Annie Award Nominations

Check out the complete list of the 2016 Annie Award nominees after the jump.
Unsurprisingly, it was Oscar-frontrunner Inside Out that led the pack with 14 nods. The Good Dinosaur scored 10 nominations, making this a very Pixar-heavy line-up. Despite the beloved animation studio’s reputation and popularity, they haven’t taken home a Best Animated Feature Award since 2009, when Up scored the top prize. This year could very well be the start of their big awards comeback. After all, an Oscar win for either of these movies would be the company’s first Academy Award since Toy Story 3’s 2010 win and every little bit of awards momentum counts.
However, it will be interesting to see if this particular race mirrors one of the most interesting awards showdowns waiting in the wings. Although the massively successful, critically beloved Inside Out will most likely take home an Oscar next year, Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s incredible Anomalisa is a worthy opponent. Stop-motion animated, brutally dark, emotionally complex and made strictly for adult audiences, it’s the kind of opposition Pixar has never faced before. It’s unlikely to triumph at the Annie Awards (where it has five nominations), but it’s possible to imagine a scenario where the Pixar vote is split between Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, giving this underdog a chance at victory. If Paramount decides to invest heavily in Anomalisa’s Oscar campaign (and there’s a strong chance they will), this could prove to be the most interesting awards race of them all.
Interesting, this showdown is paralleled in the Best Animated Short Subject category, where Don Hertzfeldt’s staggering World of Tomorrow is facing off against Pixar’s Sanjay’s Super Team.
Anyway, the other Best Animated Feature nominees are Shaun the Sheep: The Movie and The Peanuts Movie, beating out competition from Minions, Home, Hotel Transylvania 2 and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. While it’s hard to argue with much of the line-up, we’ll call foul on Richard Kind and Tom Noonan not getting nominations for their voice over work in Inside Out and Anomalisa, both of whom continue immeasurably to their respective films.
You’ll surely find something to complain about too after perusing the full list of nominees below.
