‘Power Rangers’ Character Descriptions Provide Backstory For Our Five Heroes

Now we have some more details on the five teenagers who suit up as the new Power Rangers in the form of short character descriptions that provide some backstory and key details that will influence how each of them interact with each other and their place in the overall story. The Power Rangers character descriptions definitely offer some insight into what we can expect from the new team.

Here’s each of the characters broken down (via Collider), with images of their original version from the first iteration of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers from the 90s:

Billy – 17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.

Just from these character descriptions below, it’s clear that this new version of Power Rangers will at least have a little more dpeth to them than those from the original version of the series, or even the first movie, which featured three of the original cast members. But that doesn’t mean the movie itself will have anything substantial in the story department, especially after we heard what the basic plot of the movie is in our last update.

These character descriptions share some traits with the first Power Rangers, which also have the same names, but thankfully there’s no indication that Zack must be black or Trini must be Asian, so we might see the races of some characters switched around in the movie. That could only help this new version of Power Rangers since no one took issue with the fact that the casting from the first season was strangely somewhat racist, by having the black guy as the Black Ranger, and the Asian woman as the Yellow Ranger.

Noticeably absent is the character of Tommy, arguably the most popular character from the original series. But Tommy was a later addition to the show, first entering the fray as the evil Green Ranger. but Tommy ended up being turned into a good guy, and his Green Ranger eventually became the White Ranger. I believe there’s more history to the character of Tommy after that, but my knowledge of Power Rangers stops after that because I grew up.

Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some kind of cliffhanger or credits scene where the arrival of the Green Ranger is teased for a sequel or something like that. Fans would probably go nuts.

Power Rangers hits theaterson January 13th, 2017.
