2015 Cannes Director’s Fortnight Lineup Features ‘Green Room,’ ‘Yakuza Apocalypse,’ ‘Dope’

The Cannes Directors’ Fortnight is essentially a parallel festival that runs alongside the primary Cannes Film Festival, and the 2015 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight lineup has just been announced in full. It includes Green Room, from Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier — aka one of our most anticipated films of the year. It also includes Sundance fave Dope as the closer, and Takashi Miike’s Yakuza Apocalypse. Seeing a Miike film programmed in a festival like this raises our interest in the movie.
Then there are previously announced films like Arnaud Desplechin’s The Golden Years, Phillipe Garrel’s In The Shadow Of Women, and the six-hour Arabian Nights from Miguel Gomes. The entire lineup is below, and it may well contain other films that will carry through as some of 2015’s better entries.
2015 CANNES DIRECTORS’ FORTNIGHT LINEUP
OPENER
“In the Shadow of Women” (Philippe Garrel, France). Clotilde Courau, Stanislas Merhar and Lena Paugam star in Garrel’s 25th feature, a tale of romantic betrayal centered around two impoverished documentary filmmakers adrift in modern-day Paris. (Sales: Wild Bunch)
SPECIAL SCREENINGS
“Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War of the Underworld” (Takashi Miike, Japan). Ichihara Hayato and Yayan Ruhian (“The Raid”) star in the prolific Japanese goremeister’s latest, a gangland vampire thriller.
CLOSER
“Dope” (Rick Famuyiwa, U.S.). One of the breakout hits of Sundance, this energetic comedy-actioner traces the dangerous misadventures of three black teenagers from Inglewood, Calif., who find themselves embroiled in a drug deal. Open Road and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions are releasing the film Stateside.
