2016 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

By Angie Han/Dec. 10, 2015 5:15 am EST

On the film side, Carol led the 2016 Golden Globe nominations with five, followed by Steve Jobs, The Revenant, and The Big Short with four each. But the field looks even more interesting outside of the heavy-hitters. The Hateful Eight, The Martian, and Joy, all of which were shut out of the SAG Awards nominations yesterday, fared much better today. Alicia Vikander got the expected nod for The Danish Girl, but also an unexpected one for Ex Machina. Maybe best of all, Mad Max: Fury Road is now in the running for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director.

But not everyone got great news this morning. Creed scored a lone nomination for Sylvester Stallone, while Straight Outta Compton was snubbed completely. Spotlight got some love, but its actors didn’t – Mark Ruffalo did get nominated, but it was for Infinitely Polar Bear. And the HFPA resisted the temptation to reward Johnny Depp for his lizard-like turn as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. (This from the same body that nominated him for The Tourist five years ago.)
