Channing Tatum Says ‘Gambit’ Won’t Be Your Usual Save-The-World Superhero Tale

Interestingly, it sounds like Gambit’s first solo outing won’t be the usual save-the-world origin story. Tatum hints the Gambit movie will be “something fresh,” with the world-saving stuff possibly saved for a future film. Hit the jump for all the latest on the Gambit movie.
We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We’re obviously going to go to the saving-the-world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one. We kind of want to introduce this character in a very different way. When you try to do something different, you never really know right off the bat what that is. We’re feeling our way into it. And we really just gotta prove that concept of that person.
We’re finding a writer and sort of beating it out. I don’t want to give too much away because we don’t know that much right now other than we obviously know who Gambit is.
Budgetary concerns are probably part of the possible new direction. CG explosions and frantic extras don’t come cheap, and as popular as Gambit is in the comics he’s not exactly a proven draw on the screen. But hey, a deviation from the standard comic book movie formula could be a refreshing change of pace.
In the meantime, X-Men: Apocalypse arrives May 27, 2016. Gambit may or may not show up.
Here’s the original clip from MTV, in case you’d rather watch Tatum say the words himself. I don’t blame you. He’s an attractive dude.
