New ‘The X-Files’ Revival Trailer Is All About The Monsters

Don’t expect any grand plot revelations from the latest trailer, which is once again full of images that demand you attention, not story hooks. However, this new batch of footage does focus on a few of the threats that will face our intrepid FBI agents this season, so it is very much worth 30 seconds of your time.

Prepare yourself for certain danger and watch the new X-Files trailer below.

Any trailer that begins with Special Agent Dana Scully saying “We’ve been given another case, Mulder; it has a monster in it” is a trailer that is aiming straight for our hearts. Among the monsters spotted in this trailer: some kind of zombie-looking guy with a rotting face, a seemingly mutated young girl giving the camera a death-glare, two people who appear to have psychic powers, and an oddly shaped, possibly alien hand. Threats aplenty, but as Mulder says in the footage, danger has never stopped this duo before.

Much like another beloved geek property making a belated return with hopes of attracting the devoted fans and curious newbies (you know, the one that rhymes with “car fours”), The X-Files has to deal with the fact that its last outing kind of stank. 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe was a mediocre monster-of-the-week episode stretched into a painful two hours and inexplicably dumped into theaters. It may not have been as grand a heartbreak as a certain set of prequels, but it felt like a death knell. These six episodes represent a second chance for one of popular culture’s greatest genre shows. Can it wash the taste of the last movie out of our mouths and resurrect these characters without being forced and desperate?

Well… we want to believe. And trailers full of deadpan banter, black goo, cynical musing on government corruption, and some Mulder/Scully banter make us feel like our faith has not been misplaced.

The X-Files will make its grand return on January 24, 2015. A new box set collecting the entire series will be available this December.
