Fox’s Jasmine was the exotic dancer girlfriend (later wife) to Will Smith’s Steven Dubrow. She was also the mother of Dylan Dubrow, played by Ross Bagley in the original and Jessie Usher in the upcoming sequel. Smith will not return.

Also on board for Independence Day 2 are Charlotte Gainsbourg and Liam Hemsworth. The latter is rumored to be playing the son-in-law of President Whitmore (originally portrayed by Bill Pullman, expected but not yet confirmed to return).

Independence Day 2 is scripted by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, with rewrites by James Vanderbilt and Carter Blanchard. The sequel has been in the works for several years already. At one point it was envisioned as a trilogy, but at the moment only a single film has been greenlit.

We’ve previously heard the film would be set about two decades later, with a new generation of fighters going up against the next wave of invading aliens. However, specific plot details are hard to come by right now. While Emmerich and his team have talked about the story in the past, we don’t know what’s changed since then.

Independence Day 2 is on slotted for June 24, 2016, 20 years almost to the day after the original Independence Day hit theaters.
